So... you wanna get into telly?
But you've got no experience, so you'll never make it
in the industry.
After all, it's a vicious circle, right? You need an
opportunity to gain experience, but you can’t get experience without first
having an opportunity... Well stop right there…
… You couldn’t be further from the truth. There ARE
schemes, opportunities and initiatives out there to help those with no TV
experience get their foot in the door. You just have to be prepared to look,
and try reeeeally hard.
On Tuesday 13 November, Channel 4 are teaming up with
ITV and the BBC to host an entry-level panel/networking/awesome event for
people interested in ALL areas of television, not just the ‘usual’ production
routes.
There’ll be a chance to grill the Talent Executives
from all three companies, listen to the types of opportunities available to you
in the coming months, have a cheeky bevvie or two and also chat with current
apprentices, interns and people who have come through various schemes
themselves.
I’m extremely excited to be part of the ‘intern panel’
on the evening and can’t wait to meet hundreds of other telly lovers like
myself. The panelists range from those with absolutely no qualifications past
their GCSEs, to those with degrees or just experience in a non-telly-related
workplace and we’ve all made it into the biggest broadcasting companies in the
UK.
So if you fancy coming along and finding out more
about how you could kick off your career in television (in anything from
administration to marketing, sales and more) check out the event website, here.
After all, why wouldn’t you want to work in a place
where you can walk past Usher in the canteen or share a lift with Ashleigh and
Pudsey from Britain’s Got Talent? Not just your average office, eh?
Look forward to seeing you all there!
